Winter Beach Walks

A summer beach is a beautiful thing – cool breezes, hot sand, and the scent of sunscreen in the air. A winter beach is a different place entirely. Often the wind and waves come in from a different direction, sculpting the beach into a whole new form. Sand moves, rocks are exposed, and seaweed piles shift from place to place.

The day after Thanksgiving our beach walk was cool and misty, the water was flat calm and perfect for skipping rocks. The sun slanting over the hills through the fog painted the stones and the water with light glow. We’ve seen this beach with rolling breakers on windy days and alive with people in the summer, but this was one of the loveliest incarnations yet.

Sometimes you don’t need to go a long way away to find the perfect spot.

Happy Travels!

5 Great Activities for Kids in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is full of great activities for kids.  Our nation’s capital has enough museums in the Smithsonian alone to fill a week and you still won’t have seen it all!  It’s one of our favorite destinations.  Here are our top five great things to do with kids in Washington D.C.:

Air and Space Museum(s) – The National Air and Space Museum has two locations and each one is a full day’s worth of fun.  The National Mall Building has rockets, planes, spaceships, and anything else that can take to the air.  Because it’s the Smithsonian, they have some unbelievable items in their collection such as an original moon lander, Charles Lindbergh’s “Spirit of Saint Louis”, and the Wright Flyer.  They’ve recently added a large hands on exhibit as well.  The Udvar-Hazy Center located near Dulles International Airport contains items that are too large for the National Mall Building.  You can see the Space Shuttle Discovery, a Gemini capsule, and tons of other cool space and flight exhibits. Comments Off on Ireland

Ireland is an amazing country with a wealth of activities to keep the busiest family on their toes.  This trip we visited Ennis in County Clare.

Activities – our top picks:

Ailwee Caves and Raptor Center – This was hands down the best place we went while in Ireland.  The raptor center has a wide variety of native birds of prey and an amazing live show where kids get to interact with the birds.  The caves are fascinating as well, and the guided tour is full of interesting facts about the geology of the caves and the Burren.  If you’re not great with enclosed spaces, the caves might not be for you but go on up anyway and follow the paths up the hill above the caves.  The views are fantastic.

Bermuda BeachBermuda in the Spring is a fantastic place to go with kids!  We went in April during school vacation week.  Springtime in Bermuda is cooler and less crowded than high season (June through September) and you can get some great deals on hotels.

Activities – our top picks:

Whaler rental from Blue Hole Water Sports – spend 4 hours exploring the beautiful blue waters near Grotto Bay.  Pack a lunch (and some extra bread to feed the fish!), sunscreen and towels for a perfect day on the water.

Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo – This is not a huge place but it’s a treasure trove of interesting animals as well as facts about Bermuda.  A+ for education value all in a lovely setting.
